Two dead in pool drownings

February 23, 2007

SWIMMING pool accidents have claimed the lives of a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, in separate incidents on Queensland's Gold Coast.

The boy was dragged unconscious from a swimming pool at Conrad Jupiters Casino hours after he arrived in Australia with his family on holiday from China.

A casino spokeswoman said the boy was swimming with a group of people when the incident occurred just after 7pm (AEST) yesterday.

A security guard pulled the boy from the pool after hearing members of the group screaming for help.

With the help of several other first aid-trained security officers, the guard tried to revive the boy until paramedics arrived.

Conrad Jupiters said the boy's family had arrived from China only yesterday and were distraught.

The casino's managing director Xavier Walsh expressed his deepest sympathy to the family and offered counselling to staff members who witnessed the incident.

Police have been provided with pool security camera footage but said today they did not believe there were suspicious circumstances.

In the other incident, a 14-year-old girl drowned in a pool at a home in Surfers Paradise.

Police said the girl had been swimming when she was found unconscious about 5.30pm (AEST) yesterday.

Emergency officers performed CPR but the girl was pronounced dead at the Gold Coast Hospital.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances.
